Now, we get out of the winter doldrums. Collegiate golf starts and it’s starting with my favorite for of play – match play. The Ohio State Men’s Golf teed it up for the Big Ten Match Play Championship Friday and Saturday.

Here’s the set-up and morning match recap. Let’s get on with Friday’s afternoon match against Maryland.

Here’s the tournament draw for the first three rounds.

The Buckeyes

The Buckeyes that made the trip to Palm Coast were: Josh Wick, Will Grimmer, Daniel Wetterich, Caleb Ramirez, Will Voetsch, Jeg Coughlin III, Caden Orewiler and Kevin Stone.

So, there’s the set-up. How’d it go?

Friday Afternoon Round vs Maryland

The afternoon round went nearly as well as the morning round; the Buckeyes beat the Terrapins 4-2.

Winning their matches were: Will Grimmer 2-up, Will Voetsch 4&2, Kevin Stone 1-up and Jeg Couglin III 3&1. Daniel Wetterich lost his match 5&4 as did Caleb Ramirez 2-up.

Josh Wick

Josh did not play this match.

Will Grimmer

Will needed the entire 18 holes to beat UM’s David Kocher 2-up. After the 15th hole, Will was 1-down until he birdied the 16th hole to square the match. A par on the 17th hole put Will in a a 1-up with one to play. He birdied the final hole to close out the match, 2-up. In his 18 holes played, Will was -5 for the day.

Daniel Wetterich

Daniel got off to a shaky start with two bogeys in his first three holes to fall 2-down to Peter Knade after three holes. He pulled to 1-down through nine holes. At that point, Knade caught fire with 3 birdies and a par to push his advantage to 5-up with 5 to play (dormie 5). Not a good situation for Daniel. Both players parred the par-4 14th to end the match. Through the 14 holes of play, Daniel was even par.

Caleb Ramirez

Caleb lost a tough, close match to UM’s Chris Navarro 2-up. The match was all square through the front nine holes. Two holes later, Caleb was 1-down, three holes later was 2-down and could got gain any ground before he just ran out of holes.

Will Voetsch

In contrast to his morning round, Will got off to a fast start. Two birdies in his first four holes staked Will to a 2-up lead over UM’s Tim Colanta. Will birdied three consecutive holes to extend his lead to 5-up through 9 holes. Both players parred the next three holes before Colanta trimmed Will’s lead to 3-up with three to play. Will closed out the match on the next hole. In the 16 hole holes of play, Will was -4 to par.

Jeg Coughlin III

Jeg played well in his opening eight holes, but was 3-down at the point. Jeg reeled off three consecutive birdies to square the match after 11 holes. The next three holes had no change of status and both player walked off their 14th hole all square. Jeg seized control of he match with an eagle 2 on the par-4, 413 yrd 2nd hole.  Two closing pars earned Jeg the 3&1 win. In 17 holes of play, Jeg was -4 to par.

Caden Orwiler

Caden did not play in this match.

Kevin Stone

Kevin had a steady-as-she-goes round to defeat UM’s Evan Santa 1-up. Through nine holes, Santa had 5 birdies and held a 4-up lead. Normally, Kevin would not want to be in a position like this. Over the next six holes. Kevin had 5 pars and a birdie compared to Santa’s 5 bogeys and a par to erase the deficit and take a 2-up lead with three holes to play. Three more pars by Kevin closed out the match 1-up.

This was a very good start to the Spring schedule. Through two matches. the Buckeyes have won both matches by a combined 9-3 and are in second place in the East Division. Regardless of what combination of players coaches Moseley/Smith, they players responded by playing solid match play golf. They went “low” to par when they needed and maintained pressure with pars when needed.

Saturday morning’s round is versus Iowa. The Hawkeyes had a tough Friday; their 3.5 points have them in 7th place in the West Division. Ohio State will tee it up with Wetterich, Grimmer, Orewiler, Voetsch, Coughlin and Wick.

Tomorrow afternoon I’ll have the Saturday morning round recap.

Go Buckeyes!
