This was a fairly light week we two Buckeyes in tournaments, primarily in my neck of the woods. Ryan Armour was in Oakville, ON for the RBC Canadian Open and and Emma Jandel in Albany, NY for the Fucillo Kia Championship.

Ryan Armour is in a challenging stretch of National Opens. After missing the cut at The Open, he returned to North America for the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately, he met the same fate with opening rounds of 72-71-143 (-1) to miss the cut by

Ryan opened play on the back nine on Thursday’s first round with two bogeys over his first five holes. He recovered with birdies on the par-5 16th and 18th holes to make the turn at level par. Ryan quickly got to -2 with birdied on #1 -#2. This good work was undone with a double bogey on hole #8, Ryan’s 17th of the day, to get to the clubhouse at level par 72.

In Friday’s second round, Ryan again birdied holes #1 and #2 to get to -2 within about 25 minutes of play. After a bogey on the 5th hole, Ryan parred out the front nine to make the turn at 34 (-1). He played the back nine in 37 (level par) to finish his day, and his tournament, at 71 (-1).

Emma Jandel continued east on I-90 from Rochester, NY to the Fuccillo Kia Championship in Albany, NY. The event was weather-shortened to 36 holes. Emma’s rounds of 69-69-138 (-4) earned her a T-18th finish.

In Emma’s 1st round, she played holes #1 – #9 in even par. On holes #10 – #18, she was -2 through four holes, then closed with bogey-birdie (always a nice way to end a nine) for a nine of 33 and a round of 69 (-2).

In round two, Emma was -1 on the front nine (2 birdies, 1 bogey) and -1 on her back nine (1 birdie, 8 pars) to again shoot a 69 (-2).

This was Emma’s best tournament of the season. She had two rounds of very solid play. Hopefully, she can springboard this performance to maintain some momentum as the year progresses.

The the grip change to a stronger position may be paying off. My last two rounds have been 78-80; my best and fourth best rounds of the summer. Maybe “we’re” on to something.  have two more rounds scheduled over the next few days, so we’ll see.

It’s not all wine & roses, however. In both recent rounds, I’ve double-bogeyed the 365 yard par-4 13th. It’s not a hard hole. On both rounds, I’ve had wedges in my hands for my 2nd shots… and my 3rd shots.. and my 4th shots… Obviously, I’ve been running a little hot coming off the 13th green lately. Still a few bugs in the system, but I think I have the contagion isolated.
