The Buckeyes head to warmer climes (Peoria, AZ to be precise) for the three-round, two-day Westbrook Spring Invitational.

The Course

This is a pretty young lineup. Well, the way the freshmen and sophomores have been playing, why not?

That’s the set-up. How’d it go?

It was a bit of a struggle for the Buckeyes. Through two rounds, their team score of 584 (+8) had them in 13th place. Their morning round of 291 (+3) had them in 11th place and their afternoon round of 293 (+5) placed them 12th.

Aneka Seumanutafa shot a 137 (-7) to lead the Buckeyes. Aneka also is in medalist position in the 93 player field after two rounds. Yuki Sasaki had a 148 (+4),  Adeena Shears a 149 (+5), Lauren Peter a 150 (+6) and Sofia Seldemirova a 152 (+8).

Aneka just lit the course up on Sunday. Her two rounds in the 60’s (69, -3, 68, -4) were her two lowest rounds to date in her young college career. Aneka had 13 birdies and 18 pars. Through two rounds, Aneka leads the field in birdies.

Yukie had rounds of 75 (+3) and 73 (+1).  She had 2 birdies in her morning round 5 in her afternoon round. She had 19 pars for the two rounds.

Lauren had rounds of 75 (+3) and 75 (+3). She had two birdies in her morning round and 27 pars for the two rounds. Lauren’s 27 pars ranked her 10th in that category for all participants.

Adeena had rounds of 72 (E) and 77 (+5). She had three birdies in her morning round and 26 pars for the two rounds.

Sofia had rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5). She had two birdies in her morning round and 25 pars for the two rounds.

Niki (I)

Niki had rounds of 70 (-2) and 71 (-1). Her nine birdies were 2nd most of any Buckeye and T-5th of all participants. Niki was the only Buckeye, through two rounds, to have to core higher than bogey. She had a very good opening day.

Stats & Stuff

Ohio State had 115 pars, ranking them T-12th. They had 27 birdies, ranking them T-6th.

The Buckeyes played the par-3s to an average of 3.05, +2 to par, ranking them 4th. They played the par-4s to 4.19, +19 to par, ranking them 14th. They played the par-5s to 4.88, -5 to par, ranking them 9th.

Below is a frequency table of how the Buckeyes scored, such as number of birdies, number of pars, etc…

Round Eagle Birdie Par Bogey 2X 3X 4x
1 0 16 54 18 2 0 0
2 0 11 61 15 3 0 0
3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Total 0 27 115 33 5 0 0

This is pretty consistent scoring for both rounds. The fact that in 180 holes of golf played there were only 5 double bogeys is an encouraging sign.

This was an extraordinarily good opening day for Aneka and Niki. Overall, the team had some good play in the morning round, but really flattened out in the afternoon round. Two teams, Nebraska, Denver and UC Davis, improved significantly from morning to afternoon round. The other 13 teams were +/- a “handful” of strokes from round to round.

Up Next

Round 3 is Monday.

Go Buckeyes!
