The spread of corona-virus, as we all know has introduced new realities for us all. The impact it has already generated into the sporting world is clear shutting the seasons down for the NBA, NHL, and Spring Training for MLB.

Now, as we are fully aware, March Madness, that time of College Basketball insanity that we all yearn is on the shelf and not happening. It is a precaution in the assistance to slow its dangerous spread. I know I frowned on hearing this, but it is the right thing to do. It is the responsible thing.

Tournament games in every league has been shuttered. On Friday twice past – Division III NCAA tournament games were played in an empty gymnasium at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. A lot of heat came from that decision. Now Division III is following suit with ALL the sporting world.

The Big Ten Conference on Saturday March 8th released a statement on corona-virus, also known as COVID-19:

“The Big Ten Conference’s main priority is to ensure the safety of our students, coaches, administrators, event staff and fans as we continue to monitor all relevant information on the COVID-19 virus and its impact on hosting events in public spaces.

“At this time all Conference championships/tournaments will continue to be held as scheduled, and we will continue to consult with local and state public health departments, host facilities and the NCAA leading up to and during these events to implement best practices and provide the most current information.”
That all changed.

“The Big Ten Conference will use this time to work the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the conference said in a statement.

“The main priority of the Big Ten Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus.”

It feels like a wake … symbolically. But, for sure, we do not want any real wakes due to any irresponsibility’s in favor of “profit.”

Be careful out there and take care of yourself and others.  Follow Medical and scientific advice, and wash your hands often.
